With its ideal setting in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno is situated near the center of California. Fresno is the largest inland city in the state with San Francisco to the northeast and Los Angeles to the southeast. At the junction of Highways 99 and 41, easy access to major roadways brings many visitors to the city.

Newcomers moving to Fresno will discover a mix of historical buildings and modern structures. From downtown lofts to neighborhood apartment buildings, the Fresno housing market offers all types of housing with affordable rent. The population is also diverse with over 80 ethnicities in Fresno County.

Like most large cities, a comparison of neighborhoods shows a wide contrast in rooms to rent or single family units. There is something available to fit any person's taste. Downtown Fresno tends to offer a grittier urban feel, while communities to the north and northeast of downtown are less hectic with more of a small town atmosphere.

Just northeast of downtown, the revitalized Tower District surrounds the historical water tower of its namesake. The neighborhood features the historic Tower Theatre. It is listed on the National List of Historic Places. Providing unique local shops and eateries, the Tower is a hotspot for nightlife and live music.

The architecture of the Tower District contrasts sharply with newer builds in popular northeast neighborhoods. The community is home to classical architecture. American Craftsman and California Bungalow style single family homes are available as well as apartments and rooms in large Spanish Colonial Revival Style houses.

Although Downtown still features some historical buildings in the Chinatown area and Fulton Mall, redevelopment has claimed several deserted buildings. Residential housing replaced some sites with trendy lofts, condos and reasonably priced apartments. Young professionals are attracted to the artsy shops and unique restaurants of Downtown's urban development.

Bullard, located northeast of Downtown, is one of the most popular Fresno neighborhoods. Another popular choice is Woodward Park in the north section of the city. Bullard and Woodward Park are good areas to find newer homes and remodeled properties.

Another hotspot, the Fresno High neighborhood, is host to a wide range of types of housing including some historical homes, townhouses, and furnished rooms. Fresno High is just northeast of Downtown. Regarding Section 8, qualifying homes are scattered throughout Fresno neighborhoods.

Fresno's Parks and Recreation Department is family friendly with close to 80 parks. Named PARCS, the city offers community centers with programs for most age groups. PARCS also provides several shaded play areas. The Tot Lots canopies help lower the temperature by up to 30 degrees.

The city has plenty of grown-up venues as well. A popular Fresno public golf course, Riverside, is set on the scenic banks of the San Joaquin River. The 18-hole course, known as Big Muni, offers tree-lined fairways and spectacular views.

Fresno Area Express (FAX) is the main public transportation source in Fresno with Amtrak and Greyhound also available. The area is served by Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
