Located less than 12 miles across the bay from San Francisco, Oakland offers several reasons to live in the East Bay. From the affordable housing and shorter commute times,to unique neighborhoods and political passion, Oakland claims its own identity.

The most noticeable contrast between the two cities comes down to dollars. As far as housing is concerned, San Francisco rates as one of the most expensive cities in the country. Residents can rent a 750 sq. ft. apartment in Oakland for the same price about 350 sq. ft. costs in San Francisco. In Oakland the rent price includes amenities and parking. If you are interested in a lower cost of living and cheaper housing, Oakland is a good choice.

Oakland portrays diversity in the population and the geography. With over 150 languages spoken in East Bay, Oakland is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country.

Oakland offers two contrasting terrains. Referred to as The Flatlands, the westernmost part of the city lies in a coastal terrace while the more affluent section of the city, The Hills, is situated in foothills and hills. It hosts the downtown area, government buildings and all three of Oakland's professional sports teams. The Oakland Raiders football team, The Golden State Warriors basketball team, and the baseball team, The California Athletics all claim The Flatlands as home.

Oakland features contrasting neighborhoods, with The Flatlands' Jack London Square one of the most popular. Tucked on the waterfront, it's named for the author of the same name. It is home to several large condo buildings and apartment high rises offering high quality housing with all the perks. Furnished rentals and qualifying Section 8 housing surround the square area, with affordable places to rent spread throughout The Flatlands. Jack London Square captures the interest of visitors with a mix of local boutiques, live music, and unique eateries.

Like most large cities, some pockets of neighborhoods are grittier than others and can contrast sharply within a few blocks. When it comes to housing, it depends on what feels like home to each potential resident. Some of the more popular neighborhoods include Bushrod, Rockridge, Upper Rockridge, Piedmont, Redwood Heights, Fairview Park, the Canyons, the Laurel District, and the Oakland Hills. Temescal is considered a popular up-and-coming neighborhood. Its fast growth is associated with the completion and easy access to I24.

Efficient commutes are due largely to Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). The BART trains run to stations scattered all over the city with underground tubes connecting Alameda and San Francisco to East Bay. Bus service, Amtrak, and ferries serve the city. It is also home to Oakland International Airport.

Oakland's one-of-a-kind claims include a natural salt water tidal lagoon, Lake Merritt and the Big Three sports teams. Designated in 1810, the area around Lake Merritt was named the country's first wildlife refuge. The weather is another Oakland highlight. Many sources cite Oakland as the city with the best climate. Oakland is the county seat for Alameda County.
