Section 8 Housing - Wyoming

Wyoming is the least populated of the 50 United States. It has been listed as the Most Livable state of all 50 for 2009, slipping to number 6 in 2010.

As is to be expected with such a limited population in state comprising almost 100,000 square miles, Section 8 housing opportunities will be somewhat limited, and will often have a waiting list. This makes it important to have a source of information that is updated on a regular basis, so that when opening do become available, it is possible to respond quickly.

One recent survey revealed that at the time it was conducted, there were fewer than 30 openings for rental property with landlords that accepted Section 8 housing vouchers.

Examining this statistic more closely shows that state capital Cheyenne, with a population of almost 60,000, had about 10 Section 8 rental opportunities. Three of those were listed as accepting families, four were aimed at those with disabilities and the remaining three were geared toward an elderly clientele. Of the total, only one property advertised having three bedrooms.

Most of the rental properties will be apartments. There are some houses, but these will generally be sporadic and in high demand, meaning that they will seldom be open for very long.

Compare these statistics with Wyoming's neighbor to the south, Colorado, which has almost 4 times the number of Section 8 properties, and it is evident that it might take some patience to secure Section 8 housing in Wyoming.

Wyoming's next most populous city, Casper, also has ten properties making Section 8 housing available. Only two of these can claim handicapped accommodations. The remaining 8 are targeted at elderly and family tenants. The positive report is that there were five situations where there were two or three bedroom to be obtained.

Just south of the border with South Dakota, Sheridan, Wyoming had only four facilities for Section 8 tenants. Only one of these accepts families, one is for disabled and the remaining two are for the elderly.

Keep in mind that there could be more or less available at any given time. Check frequently, especially at the beginning and the end of the month when many leases generally expire.

Using is an efficient way to check availability and to contact potential landlords. It is also a great way to find the Section 8 housing with the best possible location with regard to employment and schools.
